2005 Safety & Training Day Debrief Meeting — March 17, 2006
Attending: Denise Castro; Ed Lee; Josiah Sheehan; Deborah Dickson;
Levi McKenny; Ben Bonner
The following is a list of concerns and/or recommendations taken from the 2005 Safety &
Training Day employee survey and the observations and experience of the employees
serving on the 2005 Committee. These items should be reviewed by the 2006 Safety &
Training Day Committee in preparation for the 2006 event...
* Seating: A number of employees mentioned that the chairs being used are
uncomfortable. These chairs (200 +) are generally only used for Safety & Training Day
and Public Works Day.
* Food: We ran out of Veggie Burritos even though we ordered the same number as last
year. And last year, we seem to have had enough. This could be because March 1 (the
day of the event) was the first day of Lent.
There are various opinions about whether or not we should have something different for
breakfast next year or stay with this menu. There was discussion about involving The
Respectful Workplace Committee in the event and having them handle food. Serving
lunch instead of breakfast was suggested since that gives you more food options.
The coffee urn from Campbell CC takes 1 Y2 hours to brew. That's a problem
considering how early we start. However, it's large enough that we can make a lot of
coffee and not run out. So if we get it going early enough, it's worth the inconvenience.
We had one pound of coffee left over from this year's event, but that may be because the
coffee wasn't made strong enough. We need a measuring cup in our kitchen supplies for
measuring coffee. Maybe that's why the coffee wasn't strong enough.
* Employee Photo Display: Let's start getting new photos of employees now so we
have them ready to go by next year. A number of the photos we had were of poor
quality. The lighting in the heated bay was such that we couldn't turn off the first tier of
lights and that "washed out" a number of the photos. See if the first tier of lights can be
controlled by a different switch. The photos should include the employee's name and the
work group they're with. If possible, use photos of the employee doing their job.
*Employee Names: Ask employees to wear name tags for the event as a way for people
to get to know each other. Have a table with tags and pens and encourage their use.
* Key Note Speaker: There was a question as to how much interaction there should be
between the Key Note speaker and the audience. How do you control this?
* Interruptions: At the beginning of the day, remind people to turn off their cell phones
or put them on vibrate. Too many calls interrupted classes and the proceedings. Remind
people to not talk during presentations. It's disrespectful to the speaker and to employees
trying to learn something. Take it outside if you can't control yourself.
