,tee
L
519RE W
ANDREORMPOW
MEMORANDUM
DATE: March 28, 2001
TO: All Employees 61)t)
FROM: Ken Bounds, Superinte
•
SUBJECT: Department of Parks and Recreation Workplace Expectations
Department Mission: Seattle Parks and Recreation will work with all citizens to be good
stewards of our environment, and to provide safe and welcoming opportunities to play,
•
learn, contemplate and build community.
Since 1989 our Department has operated with the guidance of a document, the Workplace
Expectations, developed during that year to outline our expectations of each other in the
workplace. It was designed to go beyond the "elements" of the work we do - -how many
plants we grow, work orders we complete, program participants we register, memos we
send - -to HOW we do that work and how we relate to each other as a team with a single
mission.
The Workplace Expectations, which were revised most recently in 1997, reflect our
mission, our workplace values and the systems and technologies that connect us to one
another. I believe we, as employees of Parks and Recreation, share a unique bond because
of the positive, hopeful services and message we bring to our customers and because of
the thousands of daily contacts we initiate with them and each other. In the Workplace
Expectations document we've tried to capture the values, purpose and sensibilities we
bring to our work and what we expect of each other. It is divided into two sections:
expectations for everyone, and additional expectations for those of us who supervise other
employees.
The Workplace Expectations document was produced by our Human Resources Unit after
compiling comments and observations from people throughout the Department. I look
forward to working with you in the spirit of the courtesy, respect and competence it calls
for in all of us.
I cannot overemphasize the importance of the Workplace Expectations. It is the umbrella
for all of our policies and procedures, and it will provide a great deal of the basis on which
each of us is evaluated on how well we do our jobs. Please take a few minutes to read it.
Go over it with your supervisor. Talk about it with your co- workers. Ask for clarification
if you need to. If every one of us makes the effort to -live up to these expectations, the
Department of Parks and Recreation will be truly accomplishing our mission.
Labrel /divi sion/workplacecover32801
