DRAFT
assumed that the sites will have reached a stable and acceptable proportion of weeds, but at the
same time, it is anticipated that weeds will continue to be introduced to the sites and that they
will remain an ongoing problem. Each of the three sites analyzed have been allocated
approximately two weeks of a 5 person crew to hand pull weeds in the wetland areas, remove
woody species, and paint stems. This is equivalent to one to two acres of coverage although
most weeds will be concentrated in several spot locations. Mowing will also be used in the
wetland when possible. In addition, control mechanisms for invasive exotics in the upland will
generally occur through mowing. An area of one to two acres is budgeted to be reseeded with
native species each year.
Hand weeding is very expensive and would be used less if spot spraying were available as a
control mechanism. At this juncture, BLM restrictions forbid any use of herbicides.
Certain sites also require removal of woody species to prevent their converting the wetland. It is
expected that most of this will be successfully accomplished through mowing and/or hand
removal once the current sites are stabilized.
Long -Term General Maintenance Assumptions
All capital improvements on the sites will be maintained as is. This includes trails, signs,
boardwalks, culverts, and bridges. A modest amount of educational materials will be provided
for the public. Interaction between managing entities (CRMP) will be supported. Office,
administrative and equipment costs will be included.
Site Specific Activities- DANEBO COMPLEX
Background
The three units of the Danebo complex, Oxbow East, Balboa and Beaver Run are generally
located at the northwest corner of Highway 26 and Danebo Avenue. Several industrial
complexes front the property. With the adjacent Highway 26 and the bike trail, portions of these
sites are very exposed to the public. There are trails, an overlook and signage to maintain. About
70 percent of Balboa is wetland or upland prairie and 30 percent is forested scrub or emergent
wetland which is representative of other sites at Danebo. Water control structures in Balboa and
Beaver Run must be maintained. A number of invasive- exotic species are to be controlled.
Approximately 200 feet of fence is assumed on the west of the site to protect from an- adjacent
parking lot.
Biotic Survey
Long term monitoring will focus on determining changes in the:
• Size and depth of wetlands using aerials, water gauge monitoring and annual hydrologist
review.
• Area and percent cover of rare plants species using five year monitoring schedule
• Area and percent cover of invasive exotic plant species using four qualitative reviews a year
plus quantitative review using five year monitoring schedule.
05/08/01
4
