RECOGNITION OF PROGRESS
Steve summarized how much we have to celebrate. Ten years ago the BLM wasn't even in the picture;
TNC didn't own any land in west Eugene; Spectra Physics was producing negative headlines. We've
accomplished a lot since then. However we've always been in crisis mode and have never taken the time
to celebrate. Any part of the WEW program would be the shining light of any other community while it's
just a piece of our total program. The WEW is the largest open space program in Eugene. We've
presented the WEW program in 13 different states.
The various wetheads present shared what they thought of as their greatest accomplishment with this
program (at least what they could think of as "greatest" on the spot). These included:
getting funding through public works for the program
formation of the Water Resources Team
doing things to improve the quality of life in Eugene
working with partners and maintaining a strong relationship for close to 10 years
TNC pushing on 20 years of involvement in west Eugene (started in 1978)
bring back fire
providing a role for active involvement (TNC)
Creativity and technical ability of people involved in project over last 10 years
reading recent articles in the R/G that recognize the value of wetlands
getting ISTEA launched
negotiations with west Eugene property owners when getting the plan adopted
internally holding project together on BLM side - keeping the office and people intact
being active participant in wetlands; getting things done; removing invasive vegetation
willingness of this community to use planning process to solve a problem
using a planning process to turn an problem into an opportunity
having Oregon's only functioning mitigation bank/comprehensive wetlands plan
pool of talent that has worked on the project
bringing the vision developed to implementation - the energy that has been put into implementation
2.
