w ,♦
July 11, 1994
On July 8, 1994 at 1:30 p.m. I received a call by radio concerning a large
limb that had failed. This limb was located on the west side of Lincoln
street North of west 10th avenue. A crew made up of Mike Bellmore and Jeff
Johnson was dispatched immediately. Upon arrival we took several photographs
and discovered this failed limb was 30 inches in diameter and 45 feet in
length with an approximate weight of 4000 lbs. The main trunk of the limb was
positioned length wise on the public side walk. There was some damage to the
adjacent building as a railing on one of the decks was knocked loose. A
small, 12" dbh, Norway Maple was severely damaged. A further inspection of
the part of the tree that remained standing raised serious questions as to the
structural integrity of the tree. At this point I called the Urban Forester
to meet me at the site for his opinion. We both agreed that the remaining
portion of the tree was hazardous. The crew and I went to remove the branch
section of the tree down to a spar. This made the situation safe for the
weekend. We planned on a full scale removal the following Monday.
*Note: I honestly feel that this near miss and others like it could have been
avoided if this location had been inspected and had there been and up to date
street tree inventory in place.
John Luther `; ,:. .
l'IN,,,t,, . .
L? v i e
,. yr . ` ti ,. t: fi
' ' , '? y _ + ( r
V t •
'.- = . • ; c .4.9;0e, ' _ T ' V . • . r • r ` 4.( i `
i
0.
,I s .,141i;; ' If N 1.1 • - r,! ..
•r
++ yy
 t . _ 7 ,3 l'rk 9 , L fi _
' w l7 v Sr jf S j
!
IA -c w I . - l d /j : ' j ,
n -
L
_ 1 , y
y
\ ''
,;,
