The trees are available on a first -come, first -
serve basis during the current tree - planting season, which runs from December through April,
depending on the weather.
The city established Neighborwoods in 1992 as a partnership program in which residents,
neighborhood organizations, businesses, and local government work together to plant and
maintain street trees that enhance the environment and the unique identity of each neighborhood.
The city provides the trees, tools, stakes, planting help, and training. Residents volunteer to
plant the trees in public rights -of -way along neighborhood streets and to water and care for the
trees during the first few critical years.
In 1992, volunteers planted more than 600 trees of 47 different species. The types of
trees selected for the Neighborwoods program are compatible as street trees and grow well in
the local area.
To volunteer to plant trees, or for more information about the Neighborwoods program,
call Jan Staszewski, the city's urban forester, at 687 -5359.
# ##
