' so
777 Pearl St.
Eugene OR 97401 Cop es #0: Pdn
Dear Councilwoman Keller, 1 AA
We are writing about the possible clearcutting of a
sizeable portion of the South Hills area of Eugene. This
area lies just south of the street we live on and extends a
considerable distance towards Spencer Butte. The property
involved can be found on Map Number #180320 -500 and is zoned
R1 -PD. It is a beautiful forested area covering around 46
acres. Despite the fact that this property is designated as
a Planned Unit Development (PUD), we understand that timber
companies are bidding with Coldwell Banker Realtors to
acquire the rights to clearcut the timber on it. This is
being done without having informed the neighborhoods
affected and without having held a public hearing. The
loophole that allows them to bypass the PUD process must be
plugged. currently, all they have to do is say they are not
going to develop the property, and then they are free to
sell 011 the timber without any of the restraints imposed by
the PUD process. Once the beautiful forest has been
levelled, they can then declare that they have decided to
develop the property, and it is too late to do anything to
save the trees that have been clearcut.
What we are asking the City Council to do is to amend
the Metro Area General Plan Policy as it pertains to Planned
Unit Developments so that any drastic change such as
clearcutting cannot occur without going through the PUD
process first, no matter whether the owner /developer /realtor
says he does or does not intend to develop the property. It
is ludicrous to set up a rational and well - intentioned
review process and then allow it to be effortlessly
sidestepped by those few who stand to benefit financially
through the despoliation of the lovely environment so many
of us share and treasure.
we have been told that by sending this letter to one
councilperson, it will automatically be duplicated and
distributed to all City Council members. It is our wish
that this be done, and that this issue be put on the agenda
of the city Council for its next meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
Howard W. Robertson
•
Margaret E. Robertson
W
