believed the request to be contrary with an earlier City Council directive to
avoid such projects unless directed by the entire Council or City Manager.
The Urban Forester then checked with Linda Norris. Ms. Norris said not to
meet the neighborhood group to draft code language, but have them contact her
to get direction on how to present their request to Council.
The Urban Forester contacted Ms. Leong and spoke at length. He stated that if
their main concern was the lack of information and public review, that a
request to the City Manager or City Council to have larger tree removal plans
opened for public review and comment before granting a permit. He suggested,
and stipulated that he was unsure, but this requirement for a public hearing
may be enacted by Council directive or an executive order from the City
Manager without changing existing code. Ms. Leong said that she would discuss
this option with her neighbors.
In a follow -up conversation with Linda Norris, the Urban Forester relayed the
suggestion that the neighborhood pursue the public hearing option on larger
logging operations. Ms. Norris said that the City Manager could issue such an
executive order, or, if a permit application is received, may chose to respond
out of his office.
Last week, Councilor Keller asked the Parks Planner and the Urban Forester to
meet with her on Wednesday May 12, to walk through the site. It is the Urban
Forester's understanding that she plans to explore the possiblity of
purchasing for park use.
CC Johnny Medlin
John Etter
