April 16, 1993
SUBJECT: EXTENSION OF THE LANE COUNTY TREE CONSERVATION AND PROTECTION CODE
The Lane County Tree Conservation and Protection Code will sunset on June 1,
1993. The City administers the code that regulates tree removal within Eu-
gene's urban transition area (UT). City staff has requested that Lane County
Board of Commissioner's grant an eighteen month extension of this code.
In the last eighteen months under the Lane County code one permit to remove
trees was requested and granted. This was a logging operation east of Spring
Blvd. and north of 30th Avenue and encompassed approximately 300 acres. Half
the acreage lay within the urban transition area with the remaining portion
outside Eugene's planning jurisdiction.
The County code continues to be non - controversial with a low level of activi-
ty. However, it does provide a level of safeguards to prevent large scale
clear cutting as allowed by Oregon Department of Forestry regulations.
The Lane County Board of Commissioner's is scheduled to have the first read-
ing of the extension of this code on May 12, 1993. Staff will keep City
Council informed of their actions.
For more information, please contact Urban Forester, Jan Staszewski, at
687 -5359.
cc: Chris Andersen
Bob Hammitt
John Etter
Johnny Medlin
Jan Staszewski
