HAMMITT Bob
From: MEDLIN Johnny R
To: PLAMONDON Scott F
Cc: STANSFIELD Adrian E; HAMMITT Bob; LANKSTON Jeff
Subject: Removal of Trees on the Mall (Willamette Street)
Date: Wednesday, January 31, 1996 1:14PM
Hi Scott,
Jeff Lankston from Engineering called me today to discuss some of the trees on Willamette which will need
to be removed as part of the street reopening project.
In particular, the question right now involves four trees which will need to be removed as part of the
Downtown Athletic Club (DAC) tunnel project. A question has been asked by the DAC to the City that
since we have to remove the trees in any case for our street project, could we remove the four that are
impacted by their project sooner than the rest. Jeff asked if we were interested in doing that removal.
I told that Jeff that I didn't think Maintenance Division personnel would be the best to do this and (if it
really needed to be done before the street project) that a contractor should be hired to do it. I suggested
that Engineering do the soliciting for the 2 -3 verbal quotes to have this work done since this removal
would need to be paid as a street project cost and any questions as to why the removal is being done,
when the rest would be removed, what replanting would be required, traffic control ect. could best be
responded to by Engineering.
Being fair about my reasons, I told Jeff this could be a political /public hot potato which I didn't feel
Maintenance needed to be the public interface on.
I did volunteer that if Jeff chose to move forward on the project that we would post the four trees for
removal (our standard process) using whatever reasoning for removal and the contact phone number that
Jeff would supply to us. I also said that we could get him 3 -4 names of contractors who he could call to
solicit quotes from.
We also talked about the past proposal for relocating some of those trees. I told him that my
understanding was that proposal had dies from lack of interest due to its high cost. (Scott, are you aware
of anything different? Anything else which would impact this issue? Would you please come up with a list
of contractors who could do this removal and send it over to Jeff ?)
Thanks
Johnny
Page 1
