Eugene Tree Foundation
Making Our Community a More Pleasant Place for both People and Trees to Live
693 W. 10th, Eugene, OR 97402
.
(541) 484 -7173
8Y1' r
August 11,1997 INFO ®NLy ' t/6' 2 . X9
Vicki Elmer, City Manager /
Chris Anderson, Public Works Director
City of Eugene
Eugene, OR 97401
Dear Vicki and Chris,
On behalf of the Eugene Tree Foundation I want to thank you for your
i committment to allocate $26,942 in city funds for the planting of trees •
1 in the downtown park strips.
Dennis.Lueck is completing an inventory of existing trees in the area bounded by
High to Lincoln Streets and 5th to 13th Avenues. This inventory will identify z
each tree by . species, canopy size, and relative health. Dennis is also
identifying sites within the public right of way where there are no trees.
We will be recommending to the city's Urban Forester that trees be planted
in available sites.
I would also like to thank you for sharing your visions of planting more trees
in public spaces in the city. .I think we are much in agreement about the
importance and the necessity of creating a well - established, . healthy tree .
canopy in Eugene. As city dwellers we have chosen to live and work where over
90 percent of the land is covered with asphalt and concrete. And in .Eugene,._
where construction of parking garages, apartment buildings, offices, and other
commercial ventures are being built at a very rapid pace, the livability and
quality of life to which we have become accustomed are being seriously threat
ened. Trees are our most visible and satisfying connection to the natural world
and are an essential feature of our habitat.
We at the Eugene Tree Foundation also support the idea of using this seed money
from the cutting of the trees at Broadway /Charnelton as the beginning of what
could become a long - term, institutionalized committment on the part of the city
(with the help of downtown businesses) toward reclaiming the public right of
way as places where trees can grow.
We look forward to working with you on this initial tree - planting project, and
. on others to follow...for the health and livability of our city.
DISTRIBUTED T0:
Yours Truly, MAYOR
TAA 0 , , , _ , - MiCC_________
John Kline
Member, Eugene Tree Foundation MGR
ASSTMGR
CC C. ---
DEPT—
360 Owosso Drive Eugene, Oregon 97404 -2631
(alternative address)
