Tree City USA Award Flags
1. The flags are available for various activities such as parades and special events. I think it is a good idea
to use these flags to help inform our community of the Citys' outstanding urban forestry program. We
don't have the materials to display them like flag poles nor the staff to facilitate contact with civic groups
etc. The development of the volunteer program in Public Works could provide a staff resource to
implement the contact and distribution of the flags. As mentioned, we can have these flags available at
PMW for pick and use by interested parties.
Celebration Tree Program
2. It is a good ideas to generate additional funding sources for public trees. A program like this can be
developed in association with our NeighborWoods program and can be a part of the volunteer program
currently being developed in the Public Works Department. These trees could be planted in parks, along
streets and on other City owned properties. There are national programs like "Adopt a Tree" that we can
use to get ideas for the implementation of a similar program in Eugene. A concern I have with this
approach is the fact that currently we are not able to provide long term maintenance for all of our street
and park trees. If this program could include donations for planting and long term maintenance then I
think it would be better than just planting the tree.
I thinks your ideas are really good and I appreciate your support and willingness to share them with me.
Hopefully with the development of the volunteer program some of them can be realized.
From: BERRIAN Pam C
To: DILLER Della M
Cc: PLAMONDON Scott F
Subject: FW: Tree City USA award /flags /more trees
Date: Friday, May 16, 1997 10:52AM
Della Diller: just a cc to you-- -
Scott: Can you let me know who /when /if a response is provided to Nancy? Tree City USA award flags. Distributing the flags to elementary
schools has been a really nice idea. However, it seems that the
significance of 19 consecutive awards is being lost. I'd like to develop
some ideas for displaying these for maximum impact and public visibility.
Imagine the decorative, celebratory, and public awareness value of 19
flags in a row!. for example, seen by thousands at the Lane County
Fairgrounds during the County Fair, or at the airport during holiday
travel season, or carried by City councilors and neighborhood leaders
(joint entry, similar to CC /Planning Commission a while back) in the
Eugene Celebration parade.
Page 3
