FIRTREES.PWM Page 1
May 16, 1997
CONTACT: Scott Plamondon, Urban Forester, 682 -4800
From Public Information Section, 682 -5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
APPROXIMATELY 15 DISEASED FIR TREES TO BE REMOVED AT HENDRICK'S PARK
Approximately 15 fir trees in Hendrick's Park are scheduled to be removed in mid -June because of disease
and the hazards they pose for nearby residents.
All of the trees to be removed are on the east side of the park and are within 200 feet of residences or
structures. There are approximately 120 fir trees in that general area, and the diseased trees will be removed carefully
by a contractor to minimize damage to the rest of the trees and the world- renowned floral garden in Hendrick's Park.
Last year, the City hired a private consultant to review the health of 233 trees at Hendrick's Park. That
review indicated that approximately 100 of the fir trees in the park were potentially hazardous, and 12 of the most
immediate hazards were removed last fall. The City's Urban Forester and his staff have since done a more detailed
analysisoft-he120 fir trees on the east side of the park in the vicinity of the picnic shelter
with special attention given to the 42 within this area which the private consult felt was and
verified that 12 of those trees are potentially hazardous. Many of them are infected with a
fungal disease that could spread and infect the entire fir forest in that area. However,
Final examinations are still underway however, only 15 or so of the trees in an advanced state
of decay are proposed anticipated to be removed at this time. The other trees will be
monitored with a long -term goal of establishing a healthy forest well- suited for the
particular conditions in that area. The evaluation of the remaining 113 trees from the
consultants report, including approximately 50 deemed potentially hazardous by the consultant.
will take place over the next year as staff workload allows.
Prior to any removals taking place, the trees scheduled proposed to be removed will be
posted for a minimum of two weeks, and an information session in the park will be scheduled
prior to any removals so members of the public can ask questions and provide comments directly
to the Urban Forestry staff. For more information about the Hendrick's Park tree removals,
call the Urban Forester at Public Works Maintenance, 682 -4800.
