HAMMITT Bob
From: MEDLIN Johnny R
To: *Eugene Mayor and City Council
Cc: NORRIS Linda H; BERRIAN Pam C; ELMER Vicki; STANSFIELD Adrian E; MORGAN
Dick A; HAMMITT Bob; PLAMONDON Scott F; ROBERT Michael J; ANDERSEN Chris F
Subject: Tree Removal at Hendricks Park
Date: Friday, May 16, 1997 2:03PM
Mayor and City Council:
You may recall that the Council recently requested information regarding an upcoming removal of trees at
Hendricks Park. Staff had planed to provide this information to you in next weeks council packet.
However, late yesterday Joe Kidd of the RG interviewed Scott Plamondon, our Urban Forester, regarding
this issue. Joe plans to do an article on tree removal at Hendricks Park which may come out as early as
this weekend.
Due to this, we thought you would appreciate receiving the below information prior to a RG article being
published.
Below is a news release which was in preparation for distribution late next week. We have said
"approximately 15 trees" in the release because we have not yet completed the physical testing of about
five trees. We had hope to complete this testing Monday and to be able to state the exact number of
trees to be removed. However, due to the RG interview we felt it would be best to distribute this release
today so that all the new services would be benefitted by the same information.
If you have questions, please call Scott Plamondon, Urban Forester, or me at 682 -4800.
Thank you,
Johnny R. There are approximately 120 fir trees in that general area, and the diseased trees will be
removed carefully by a contractor to minimize damage to the natural area as well as the world- renowned
floral garden in Hendricks Park.
Last year, the City hired a private consultant to review the health of 233 trees at Hendricks Park. That
review indicated that approximately 100 of the fir trees in the park were potentially hazardous, and 12 of
the most immediate hazards were removed last fall. The City's Urban Forester and his staff have since
done a more detailed analysis of 120 fir trees on the east side of the park in the vicinity of the picnic
shelter, with special attention given to the 42 trees which the private consultant felt were potentially
hazardous in that area. A number of causes have led to the decline of these trees, including a fungal
disease that could spread and infect the entire fir forest in that area.
Page 1
