HAMMITT Bob
From: MEDLIN Johnny R
To: STANSFIELD Adrian E; PLAMONDON Scott F
Cc: MORGAN Dick A; HAMMITT Bob
Subject: Hazard Tree Removals At Hendrick's Park
Date: Wednesday, February 19, 1997 4:OOPM
Hi Folks,
We need to be getting back ASAP to the hazard evaluation and, if necessary, the removal of any of the 80
- 90 trees which were cited as possible hazards by the private arborist last year. The level of anxiety of
several of the residents has resulted in two CITCOMS and a letter to RISK from an attorney who also lives
in the area. I suspect it will get more attention if we don't take some action fairly quickly to either validate
their concerns and take abatement action, or to show why the private arborists evaluation on specific trees
not to be sufficient justification for their removal.
I want to stress that we need to have everyone on -board with what we are doing about these trees.
Scott, you need to coordinate with Adrian on when the evaluations are going to be done so that he or
someone on his staff (Michael Robert ?) can be present if so desired. Also once the hazard evaluations are
complete (hopefully in mid -March or earlier), lets have a meeting, which Dick Morgan and I will attend,
where you and Adrian present the results of the evaluation and your proposal on how we are going to
abate whatever hazards are verified. We need to have recommendations on whether we let the falling
contractor market the trees, or if we want to use them within the park, or if we can even get to them to
take them anywhere. I see it as a very real possibility that we may be falling many of these trees that
can't be easily be gotten to for removal and simply leaving them where they fall.
The goal of this meeting is for us to come up with a course of action which we can all support. Dick and
Adrian will determine who else from their staff would benefit from attend that meeting.
Whatever course of action we proceed with, we will also need to have someone established as a lead
person to talk to the public and media on the tree issues. I feel that should be Scott but would be
interested to hear if other viewpoints exist. We very much need to avoid mixed signals being sent to the
public.
Thanks
Johnny
Page 1
