INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF ARBORICULTURE
GOLDLEAF AWARD
The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) was formed in 1924. The
society promotes and sponsors the research and advancement of all aspects of
tree management and care. It publishes two journals that highlight the work
and findings of researchers and practicing urban foresters. The ISA has a
membership of 5,000 with 25 chapters worldwide.
The search for better ways to manage trees extends beyond ISA members. Many
citizens are actively involved in protecting and managing urban forests
because they believe trees are a critical component in the long -term health
of our community and world.
Each year, the ISA recognizes the work of these dedicated individuals through
its Goldleaf Award. This year, Ruth Bascom was one of 30 people in the world
who received the ISA Goldleaf Award and was the only person selected in the
Pacific Northwest. Ruth received the award for her significant contribution
to environmental protection, conservation, and beautification.
Ruth has a long history of promoting trees and improving the level of tree
care in Eugene. In 1985, she spearheaded the effort to form the Tree and
Beautification Commission, which resulted in the "Entrance Beautification
Study," which resulted in recommendations for landscaping the major entrance
corridors to Eugene. In 1989, she was instrumental in the creation of a
Council- appointed Tree Commission to develop an overall management plan for
the City's urban forest.
