RESPONSIBILITIES
When trees are planted under the NeighborWoods program, by adjacent residents, they will be
expected to provide the watering as per program agreement. Trees planted under City permit
will also-be treated similarly with permit holder responsible for regular seasonal watering.
All other trees planted by the City or under the direction of the City will be watered by the
City, unless other arrangements are made.
The City will not assume the responsibility of watering trees planted without an approved
permit or under a City sponsored program.
COMMENCEMENT OF WATERING SEASON
Beginning in the first week of April the watering program will commence once soil moisture
content is 50% or below as measured 4" - 6" below the surface of the ground. The watering
program will continue until the end of the growing season.
Postcard reminders will be sent to participants of the NeighborWoods program at the
beginning of the watering season and a second watering notice will be sent approximately
thirty days later.
During the growing season each planting area will be tested before watering to determine if
water is needed. Once soil moisture is at or below 50% soil moisture approximately 15
gallons of water will be added so the water will percolate within the initial tree planting hole.
As the season progresses each area will be retested on a weeldy bases to determine the
watering needed. Some areas may need more frequent watering due to the coarse soil texture
and low water table and other area will need less frequent watering.
PRIORITY RATING FOR WATERING
The first priority in watering are trees planted in current and second year civic sites (e.g.,
major streets and municipal public grounds).
Second priority is the first and second year school site plantings.
Third priority is first and second year trees planted by others not honoring their watering
commitment.
Fourth priority is all third year trees from the categories listed above.
policy \water.pol 9/13/94
