DRAFT <br /> PUBLIC WORKS POLICY <br /> DATE: September 13, 1994 <br /> SUBJECT: NONattagil V <br /> GENERAL: <br /> Healthy, structurally sound trees along the city rights -of -way are a public asset. However, <br /> there are times when municipal' need for infrastructure addition, improvement', or repair <br /> conflict with existing city trees. In addition, private development may encounter similar <br /> conflicts with public trees. These conflicts are best resolved by finding alternative designs or <br /> methods of construction. This may include simply moving the placement of a buried utility <br /> line away from the tree. Boring under the tree rather than through roots v may be <br /> a viable alternative. However, when cost of s aving significantly ore t <br /> of the tree, the tree may be removed and shall be replaced at no expense to the City. <br /> TREE VALUATION METHOD <br /> The value of a tree will be determined by the City using "Guide For Plant Appraisal," as <br /> issued by the International Society of Arboriculture, latest edition. <br /> COSTING OF ALTERNATIVE METHODS AND DESIGNS <br /> The party requesting the removal of the city tree will provide written estimates of the costs <br /> associated with alternatives methods and designs. The City may request additional data or <br /> that other alternatives be examined. The City will review plans and costs for accuracy and <br /> reasonableness. <br /> ' Public improvements required as part of private development shall be considered a <br /> private improvement for the purposes of this policy. <br /> 2 The widening of any street within the 1915 City limits that may adversely impact a tree <br /> that is at least 25 inches in circumference as measured at 4.5' from the ground is subject to <br /> the City Charter - Section 52, Amendment II. <br /> policy\nonhaz.pol 9/13/94 <br />
