The tree crew has been asked to give examples of near misses of tree <br /> incidents from the previous 5 years that would have proven to have <br /> catastrophic results. Prior to last year the crew did not record hazard <br /> information. However there are several incidents that stand out in the crews <br /> memory. These incidents are note worthy in that there could have been loss of <br /> life or severe property damage inflicted by city owned trees. Listed below <br /> are five of our more notorious incidents. <br /> APROX DATE: LOCATION: CREW MEMBERS: INCIDENT: <br /> April 1989 377 W. 8th JL,MW,BC, Large maple limb (24 ") fell <br /> 8:30 am into apartment complex at 377 <br /> W.8th. This limb which <br /> weighed aprox. 4 tons came <br /> to rest above the main <br /> entrance of the apartments. <br /> The tree crew was able to <br /> extricate this limb by <br /> picking it up with a 20 ton <br /> crane. <br /> Sept 1990 E.11th E. of Hillyard JL,MW,BC, Large maple limb (14 ") fell <br /> 11:30 am across E. llth Ave.. This <br /> limb fell in between cars <br /> that were stopped for the <br /> traffic light. This limb <br /> fell across three lanes of <br /> traffic. <br /> June 1991 Cheshire st. E. of 210 JL,AES Oak tree (32" DBH 50' in ht.) <br /> 2:00 am up rooted and fell across <br /> Cheshire street. A motorist <br /> just got her car stopped as <br /> the tree failed. The tree <br /> fell directly in front of her <br /> car with the branch tips <br /> actually brushing her vehicle <br /> Sept 1991 SWC 13th and Charnelton JL,MW Top of Ceder tree failed. <br /> 1:00 am This top (16 "by30') failed as <br /> a vehicle was exiting the <br /> parking lot at the NWC of the <br /> library. This top fell <br /> across both lanes of <br /> Charnelton st. with the tips <br /> of the failed top brushing <br /> the private vehicle. <br /> Dec. 1,1993 llth and Washington AES,BC,JM,MW, Large limb from Catalpa tree <br /> 10:30 am MB (18 ") aprox. wt. 1500 lbs. <br /> fell across both lanes of <br /> Washington st. immediately <br /> south of W. llth ay. <br />
