Date: 07/15/93
From: John Weber CEWMJJW - RIS1
To: Bob Hammitt CEWMJRH - RIS1
Subject: Commercial logging near I -5 Denny's restr.
I want to flag an issue for you that you may hear about. Yesterday a
property owner near a 87 acre site south of I -5 and Henderson (South of
Denny's Restr.) came in to check on a logging operation about to start. In May,
Jan approved a tree removal permit for a commercial thining operation on 63
acres of this parcel that is located in the UGB. The property owner was very
concerned and ended up paying for a copy of the tree ordinance (county version)
and a complete copy of the tree removal permit that Jan approved.
Later in the day, Christine Donahue of Planning and Development, called to
say that the Laurelhill Neighborhood Assoc. is very concerned about this
logging. She said that they are having a meeting tonight and will be
discussing the issue with the intent to try to stop the logging. I made a
copy of the tree removal permit for her to take to the neighborhood meeting.
The property was owned by a Robert Mac Pherson, but I believe it was recently
sold to Debbie Smejkal (the name on the permit). Western Pacific Timber is
apparently the ones doing the harvesting. As you know, the UGB allows this
type of harvesting. I read the timber cutting plan and it appears to be in
accordance with the tree ordinance requirements, so it doesn't appear there
is anything we could or should do at this point.
-jw
