The local tree planting program has been selected to appear in Renew
America's Environmental Success Index, which features 1,600 case studies of successful
environmental initiatives from around the nation.
The NeighborWoods program was developed by the City of Eugene Public Works Department
to increase the number of new trees planted and cared for in the public rights -of -way.
NeighborWoods is a partnership that brings together neighbors, businesses, and local government to
plant and maintain street trees that enhance the environment and the unique identity of each
neighborhood. Since the program began in 1992, more than 2,000 trees have been planted.
The Environmental Success Index is put together by Renew America, a Washington, D.C. -
based group founded in 1979 to coordinate a network of community groups, environmental
organizations, businesses, governmental leaders, and civic activists involved in environmental
improvement. The index contains information about 1,600 outstanding environmental programs from
around the country and is used by governmental agencies, community organizations, businesses,
environmentalists and the media. An updated version of the index will be available in mid -1995.
For more information about the NeighborWoods program, call the Eugene Urban Forester at
687 -5359.
# ##
