Transit Routes
Applicable Planning Principles
* Streets identified as future transit routes should be designed to safely and efficiently'
accommodate transit vehicles, thus encouraging the use of public transit as a
transportation mode.
Discussion:
While arterial and collector streets are the preferred thoroughfares for transit vehicle use, there is
a need to develop street standards which will enable Lane Transit District (LTD) to utilize local
residential streets if other alternatives are not available. To this end, the recommendations
outlined below describe specific LTD vehicle characteristics which are factors in determining
street construction standards. The reference to "expected transit trips per day" is included in the
recommendations, as another factor used in establishing the base and paving characteristics in
street construction.
LTD currently reviews various City of Eugene land use applications including major partitions,
subdivisions, and planned unit developments (PUD's). As part of this process, LTD can make
recommendations concerning which streets are likely to be transit routes. In this manner, streets
can be designed using the standards outlined below. In addition, the "Design Standards and
Guidelines for Transit Facilities" adopted by the Eugene City Council in December, 1993, may
be utilized if developments meet certain criteria.
* *INSERT PHOTO **
In should be noted that LTD has identified transit routes on the proposed Local Street Plan
network as a tool to be used by City and LTD staff in future street design considerations.
Setback sidewalk standards proposed in the Eugene Local Street Plan support extension of transit
service to residential areas. Sidewalks afford pedestrians convenient, safe access to available
transit service. When sidewalks are set back from the curb, LTD is better able to meet federal
requirements for extended sidewalk loading areas as required by the Americans with Disabilities
Act. Setback sidewalks allow a concrete connector to be constructed between the street and
sidewalks fl wheelchair use
