Presently EWEB crews install most of the necessary underground electric and water facilities as
well as the telephone and cable TV ducts when a common trench is used. EWEB is transitioning
to a process where the contractor has the choice as to whether or not they want to do the
underground utility installation.
* *INSERT PHOTO **
Trenching is the method commonly used to lay utility lines; boring can sometimes be a cost -
effective altemative that reduces damage to mature landscaping when only a single utility needs
to be installed or when repairing damaged lines.
Recommendations:
1. Amend Design Standards for Eugene Streets. Sidewalks. Bikeways and Accessways to
include standards for placement of utilities beneath sidewalks.
2. Encourage EWEB and the City of Eugene Public Works Department to coordinate on
developing a process for geographic system mapping that would result in using a
common map for subdivision reviews.
r
I 9
