GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURE FOR STREET TREE PLANTING
Public Works Engineering Projects
October 24, 1994
Revised January 10, 1995
Project Tree Planting Guidelines
A. New streets or major street improvements adding lanes, curbs, etc.
Arterial and Collector street improvement projects will receive street
trees. In the case of abutting residential properties on Collector
streets the tree location and type are negotiable. Public Works
Maintence (PWM) will provide watering for a three year establishment
period.
Residential street improvement projects will receive street trees with
the property owner or resident having the opportunity to reject tree
planting. Location and type of tree is negotiable. The property owner
or resident will be responsible for tree watering. The Urban Forester
will mail reminders of watering to resident.
Other projects may receive tree planting as appropriate according to
policies in the Urban Forest Management Plan. Planting new trees will
be a project cost and is not an assessable cost.
B. Other improvements in the street right -of -way.
Improvement projects within the street right -of -way on an existing
improved street, such as adding sidewalks only, overlays, or sewer
additions, will not require planting new trees. If trees are removed as
a result of the project, the project budget will provide replacement
trees according to the guidelines for street types above. The cost of
replacement trees will not be an assessable cost. Removal of existing
trees will continue to be an assessable cost.
In the case of sidewalk additions where the property owner elects to
install the sidewalk the removal of a tree in the City required
alignment will be at the property owners expense. Replacement trees
will be at City expense and charged against the project budget. Removal
of a tree in the City required sidewalk alignment will not require a
City permit. Any other proposed tree removals in the right -of -way will
continue to require a permit from the Urban Forester's office.
It is intended that all efforts will be made to preserve trees of
significant size and /or type. Sidewalks and other improvements may be
aligned around such trees as determined by the project manager in
consultation with the Urban Forester.
Tree Planting Procedure
Engineering will provide a street tree plan to be approved by the Urban
Forester.
The Project Manager in Engineering will send out a letter to abutting property
