MULUGAN.REP Page 1
MEMORANDUM
DATE: October 5, 1993
To: Johnny Medlin
From: Jan Staszewski
Subject: Charnel Mulligan Park Street Trees - Evaluation
There are nine (9) columnar Red Maples along Charlenton Street adjacent to this park.
They are approximately 3 " -4" in diameter measured at 4.5' from\the ground.
It is my opinion that these trees (less one) will survive the remainder of this drought
with the two week hand watering cycle they have been on since July. However, the street
side trees were doing poorly even with the automated watering. These trees were planted
approximately ten years ago, but are only four inches in diameter and they should be over
eight inches. After examining the trees I-find that they are suffering from lack of
water, girdling roots and damage to surface roots "and the lower trunk which has been
inflicted over the years.
Even with additional irrigation, these trees will not survive another five years due to
the amount of damage the trees have sustained. There are no remedial measure that can be
employed to allow the trees to become structurally sound and thrive.
The cost of replacing these nine trees would be approximately $3600.00. This cost was
determined using average contractors charges for the trees (2" caliper), labor, supplies,
and watering for the first two years.
