HAMMITT Bob
From: ANDERSEN Chris F
To: HAMMITT Bob
Subject: FW: EWEB /City tree removal?
Date: Monday, March 09, 1998 1:29PM
fyi
From: WALSTON Mary F
To: ANDERSEN Chris F
Subject: FW: EWEB /City tree removal?
Date: Friday, March 06, 1998 8:30AM
FYI....MW
From: Lynn M. McDougal
To: Usual Suspects; foe @efn.org; local_activists @efn.org
Subject: EWEB /City tree removal?
Date: Thursday, March 05, 1998 10:50PM
A notification from EWEB was received in my mailbox today. The front of
the notification informed residents within a general mapped out area that
tree trimming would be going on in this area between the 23rd of February
through the end of March.
Turn the notification over and the last part includes a paragraph that
reads as follows:
"A few trees may be removed due to excesive rot [oh shades of Hendricks
Park! -ed.]. All trees targeted for removal will be reviewed by the City
of Eugene for structural soundness and posted for seven days to allow
public comment. Two trees will be planted in the local area by the City
of Eugene for each tree that must be removed."
There are a couple of things that sort of bother me and I would like some
input from anyone out there who might know something more about this:
[ Just for edification: The map of the area in which this is happening
indicates a large span of neighborhood - it is bordered on the East by
Washington and West by Chambers and a bit of River Road just over the
overpass; South at 13th and North to the edge of M. Jacobs park.]
1. How come this came to me in the mail today, March 5, with a postmark
of March 4, but lists a work start date of FEB. 23 ?? Anyone out there
living in this area who received this notification before Feb. 23?
2. Has anyone living in this area actually seen any postings on any
trees? (I live off of N. Polk and haven't see anything on my few trips
though the neigborhood over the past couple of weeks.)
3. Wonder what it means to say, Two trees will be planted in the _local
area_...' What local area? Local to whom? (This is rhetorical.)
4. What if they posted on the trees to be cut on February 16, then
actually cut them all on February 23 (the first scheduled work date) then
sent out the notification on March 4? Legal?
5. OpEd piece: I find it a bit unsettling that they mail this
notification of cuts under the umbrella of a notification of tree
trimming. Then they place the cut info on the back of the notification at
the end - almost as an afterthought ( "Oh yeah, we may be cutting a few
Page 1
