The
joint work effort is part of a training program designed to help the City and EWEB learn more
about each other's tree - pruning requirements and techniques for protecting the long -term health
of trees in street rights -of -way.
The two agencies began meeting last August to discuss tree - trimming practices and to
find ways to streamline and coordinate tree - trimming projects while still meeting all appropriate
federal, state, and local environmental and land -use laws and regulations. EWEB's tree -
trimming program focuses on removing dangerous trees and tree limbs that may interfere with
electrical transmission lines and on preventing outages that may occur due to winter storm
damage. The City's program is designed to maintain the long -term health of Eugene's urban
forest by improving trees' structural integrity. City trees are trimmed to remove dangerous
limbs and "dead wood" and to provide vision and sign clearance for motorists.
The tree - trimming on Monday and Tuesday is needed for power -line clearance. It also
will give tree crews from both agencies a chance to practice methods taught in the two -day
workshop. Davey Environmental Services, a national environmental firm, will conduct the
training for 21 EWEB and City employees.
# ##
NOTE TO EDITORS: THIS RELEASE UPDATES INFORMATION IN A RELEASE
SENT JANUARY 7.
