PETE WHITE
P.O. BOX 2163
JASPER, OR 97428
(541) 937 -2331
E. W. Letters
12351 Lincoln
Eugene, OR 97401
Dear Editor:
Regarding the March 19 Eugene Weekly short on urban forestry; three cheers to EWEB for
"topping," "rounding- over," and "directional pruning" under power lines. My experience
dealing with Lane Electric Cooperative (L.E.C.) showed their disregard for tree health, habitat
maintenance, roadside aesthetics, residential privacy, and private property. At the busy corner
of Place and Old Pengra Roads in Fall Creek L.E.C. contracted to clear -cut rather than prune
trees under the power lines. Also, without contacting me, trees on my property adjoining the
power line were clear -cut up to 20 feet from the power lines.
After I complained, Marvin Sherman from L.E.C. grudgingly agreed to pay for the cost of 1
arbor vitae for every 6 feet of property line denuded. However, because it "didn't seem that bad"
to him, he refused to offer any assistance in planting, maintaining, or replacing any failed
transplants. But what would you expect from a utility that does not support community service
organizations like The Energy Outlet. I look forward to grid deregulation so I can give my utility
dollars to a community oriented utility. I'd support EWEB with my monthly payment.
Sincerely,
Pete White
cc: Scott Planondon, Eugene Urban Forester
Sandra Bishop, EWEB Commissioner
Dean Rimmerman, Street Tree Defenders
Rick Crinklaw, L.E.C.
