My tour involed preschool age children and only allowed for about 1:15 minutes.
We hit the highlights - sat on a mower, park, bug city, trailer rides the off for
snack. Having the purrell was outstanding again this year. The teachers really
appreciated it. The parents were very impressed with PW activities. All the kids
had a great time and were beat from the action.... Kudos to this years committee
members! The overall layout improves each year ... The area for radio, swat,
police was way too cramped. It needed to be spread out so the visitors flowed
around better. At peak time, not many tours visited because of how crowded it
was .... Tiny Park - the move to the main yard was great improvement. It opened
the area up... However, I'd like to see it more visible from the entire yard. It was
located too far around the corner, almost out of the way. Waterworld seemed
spread too thin. Jackie Hallett, PW POS
My group loved PW Day. Kevin Foerstler and I split Meadowlark Elementary first
grade class and Mayor Piercy hung out with us. The only negative feedback I got
and also experienced is the bottlenecks in bldg 2, the fleet section, and wagon
rides. It is frustrating to the kids and volunteers to have to wait, sometimes 15
minutes, in a line. Some of the teachers were feeling rushed trying to scoot their
students along so the next group could step up. I don't have a solution but felt the
need to share it as it was mentioned to me a few times during our tour. I
appreciate EVERYONE who contributes and know how hard you work. Thanks
for making this yet another successful PW Day! Karen Loy, PW Admin
I too thought the event was well done. I liked the move of Tiny Park it reduced
the bottle neck going into Tiny Town. I too know the frustration of long lines and
the angst of the children. I have a couple of suggestions. It seems like all the
"cool" things the kids like are all in one area. The photos and police displays
seem to be a hit and all the kids and they get stuck in line waiting for them.
Maybe we could move the police display somewhere in the middle to spread the
kids apart. This year as in years past most of the schools arrive close to the
same time in the a.m. We have 90% of the kids pass through by 11:00. Is there
a way to schedule some of the older kids that have school all day in the
afternoon? The place was practically empty after 12:00. One thing I found very
gratifying was Vicki from Willamette Christian School of my tour took the time to
speak to her class about the respect and need for public works employees and
the work we do and also the same respect for our police force. The school was
very grateful for all of us taking the time for the event, I see it as a worth while
event. I think the event was very well done. Great job. Wayne Masoner, PW
Maint
Debbie, my experiences were much different between my morning group and the
afternoon one. The 9:00 group arrived on time, but since many 8:45 groups were
late, there was a significant log -jam at the beginning of the tour and the layout
only provides a couple of optional routes (we need to either stagger the times
more or provide more alternative routes). The afternoon group was much better
with shorter waiting times, less conflict with other groups and the ability to spend
more time answering their questions and pointing out major Public Works
practices to parents and teachers (what I feel to be the most important elements
