Jesse Cary -Hobbs
Natural Resources
Jesse started out as a part-time wetlands maintenance worker and has become a key member of the
natural resources team. According to his co- workers, he occupies a unique position in the world of
parks and natural resources maintenance. He possesses a unique combination of skills: he knows the
equipment and realities of doing maintenance in natural areas and also has a professional knowledge
of ecology, plant identification and environmental sciences.
He knows how to motivate co- workers, volunteers, seasonal staff, and the many young people he
works with through the youth corps. Co- workers talk about his people skills, good communication
skills and likable, passionate personality. Staff feel comfortable approaching him because he's
responsive: He's very good at prioritizing the many, many tasks that need to be done, providing very
effective direction, and making sure his staff have the resources they need to get the job done.
As a lead worker, he has to somehow balance getting the work done in the field with the
administrative demands of the job, which include project coordination, reviewing contracts, attending
meetings, and providing consultation to other POS work areas.
But, he manages all this in stride and with an unfailingly positive attitude. Perhaps it is because he
zealously loves his job and feels so passionately about the work he does. For Jesse, it's about teaching
people —those he works with and anybody he encounters —about our natural resources and how to enjoy
and protect them.
11 "k
38
