The tree planting will take place at 10 a.m. at the corner of 16th Avenue and Ferry Street, where a street tree was burned last year. Neighbors are encouraged to join the festivities and take part in the effort to beautify their neighborhood. Dumpsters and pick -up trucks will be available to haul trash and yard debris, and tools for raking and planting will also be available for those who would like to do a little gardening. Refreshments will be served at Central Presbyterian Church at 1475 Ferry Street. The event is expected to last until 3 p.m. The neighborhood clean up and tree planting was conceived and organized by the task force that convened after a riot took place in the neighborhood last year in which a street tree and trash can were burned. The purpose of the task force and this event is to create stronger ties in the community in order to prevent episodes of violence in the future. The event is a collaborative effort between the City of Eugene, University of Oregon, ASUO, West University Business Association, Central Presbyterian Church, Sanipac, Von Klein Property Management, and many neighbors.
