9 -Hole Improvements (yardage markers & bunkers)
In the past the only yardage markers on the course was the occasional lava rock
somewhere near the 150 yard marker. Late spring, early summer after the new
fairway irrigation heads were installed, we performed a GPS on all the irrigation
heads and by June 15 all irrigation heads had yardages on them. This is a necessity
for modern golf facilities. This has also helped the pace of play and brought new
members of the golf community to try Laurelwood.
- visible yardages on sprinkler heads
The bunkers that we inherited at Laurelwood were in complete disrepair. Although
initially not sure what to do with them, after careful study and research we became
convinced that repairing and building new bunkers would bring us new and more
returning customers. At this time we have added 7 new bunkers and rebuilt 1. There
have been both expected and unexpected benefits. Customer excitement and rounds
of golf have definitely increased due to the aesthetic and challenge of their presence.
Unexpected benefits have been... if placed in low wet areas around the greens it
seems to relieve the hydraulic water pressure around them and creates a drier
playing surface and healthier, easier to maintain turf. It also speeds up pace of play
because when placed correctly they stop balls from rolling down hills, of which there
are plenty at Laurelwood.
