FIELD OF DREAMS PROPOSAL
The proposed Field of Dreams Park would mean that Gilbert Park in the same
vicinity would no longer be necessary. If we were to retain ownership of
Gilbert Park and add the Field of Dreams Park to our inventory, we would be
exceeding parks space standards for the neighborhood.
John Etter sent a notice to area neighbors notifying them of the proposal to
accept the Field of Dreams Park and liquidate Gilbert Park from our inventory.
He received several phone calls and a letter signed by 51 persons in
opposition to the sale of Gilbert Park.
Public Works staff believe that we should proceed with the sale of Gilbert
Park to help reduce on -going maintenance and operation liabilities, provide
some capital to supplement the development of Field of Dreams Park (NEDCO
would bear most of the development costs) and to prevent exceeding current
parks space standards. We have some other examples, where if we have refused
to accept a parcel of land near existing parks. An example occurred in the
whiteaker neighborhood when whiteaker neighbors approached us to develop a
vacant parcel. The land was in the proximity of Maurie Jacobs Park that
already had playground equipment on it. This is what the neighbors were
requesting for the vacant parcel.
If we process the sale of Gilbert Park it is likely that neighbors would
elevate this to the Council level.
rN
