March 23, 2012, 6:45 a.m.
Winter Storm Update as of 7 a.m. Friday, March 23
Public Works crews continue to clean up following a heavy snow storm that hit the area early
Wednesday.
All priority routes have been plowed, and travel lanes are free of snow. Early Friday morning, street
operations crews reported spots of black ice, particularly on bridge decks, overpasses and higher-
elevation streets in the south hills. Deicers have been applied, and several sanding trucks are on standby
to respond if icy conditions develop. Motorists are advised to use caution if driving this morning.
The relatively good condition of the street surfaces allows personnel and equipment to be shifted to
tree clean-up operations. Saws are being sharpened and other equipment readied for a big push today
to tackle storm debris in the rights-of-way. The city has been divided into four quadrants, and at least a
dozen crews will be out with dump trucks, loaders and chippers.
As of Friday morning there are no reports of trees blocking any streets in Eugene. Crews will continue to
focus on cleaning along the sides of streets and clearing public sidewalks and park areas. Public Works
reminds property owners that they are responsible for dealing with broken trees and limbs and other
storm damage on private property. Woody debris can be taken to commercial recyclers, including Lane
Forest Products and Rexius.
On Thursday, crews were successful in opening all sections of the Ruth Bascom Riverbank Path (along
the Willamette River) and the Fern Ridge Path (along Amazon Creek). Some sections of the paths were
under high water on Thursday; however, as of Friday river levels are dropping and paths should not be
inundated. On the streets and onstreet bike lanes, sweepers are beginning to make their rounds
cleaning up sand and other small debris left over from the storm. Cyclists are advised to use caution
until clean-up operations are completed.
Who to Call
• To report life-threatening emergencies, call 9-1-1.
• To report trees and limbs in the public way, including parks and along the riverbank bike paths, call
Eugene Public Works at 541-682-4800.
• To report power outages, call EWEB at 541-484-2300.
• To report other service outages such as telephone and cable TV service, contact the utility provider.
