July 6, 2011

CONTACT:
Tom Larsen, City of Eugene Traffic Engineer, 541-682-4959

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Detour Goes Into Effect Monday on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Traffic on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near Autzen Stadium will be rerouted onto Leo
Harris Parkway for about six weeks beginning Monday, July 11, while a contractor working for the
University of Oregon extends underground utilities to serve an expansion of the Casanova Center.
Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes such as I-105 to avoid delays. Harlow Road is
not recommended as an alternate route because of paving work beginning next week on Coburg Road
from Willakenzie to Oakway roads.
During construction, a quarter-mile-long section of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will be
closed to through traffic between the west end of Leo Harris Parkway and the west side of Justice
Center Loop. Local access to Lane County services and other agencies on the north side of Martin
Luther King Jr. Boulevard and to the Kinsrow Avenue neighborhood will be provided from the east end
of Leo Harris Parkway. Look for signs with directions to specific locations. Allow extra travel time.
A temporary refuge island and crosswalk will be created at the west end of Leo Harris Parkway
to assist pedestrians. Lane Transit District will continue to serve the bus stop near the west end of Leo
Harris Parkway and will add a temporary stop near the east end of the parkway. Service will not be
provided to the four stops within the closure area and the two stops adjacent to the intersection of
Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Kinsrow Avenue.
Three popular summertime venues – PK Park (home of the Eugene Emeralds), the Science
Factory, and Cuthbert Amphitheater – will remain accessible via Leo Harris Parkway.
The utility work, which includes relocating and replacing stormwater drainage and wastewater
sewer lines serving the Autzen complex, is being done by Hoffman Construction to prepare for the
University of Oregon’s expansion of the Len Casanova Center, as well as a new facility for the
athletics department’s women’s soccer and lacrosse programs.
Since the Casanova Center was completed two decades ago, the University’s athletics
department has increased its intercollegiate sports offerings with the beginning of intercollegiate
competition in the sports of women’s soccer (1996), women’s lacrosse (2005), baseball (2009) and
acrobatics and tumbling (2009-10).
Traffic updates about this and other road construction projects in the metro area are available
at www.keepusmoving.info.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
