September 4, 2009

CONTACT:
Eric Jones, Public Works Public Affairs Manager, 541-682-5523

From Public Information Section, 682-5523 or 541-954-2938
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dedication Marks Successful Completion of Bailey Hill Road Improvement Project
More than $1.3 million in improvements to Bailey Hill Road will be dedicated on
Tuesday, Sept. 8. The dedication event begins at 11 a.m. near the corner of Bailey Hill Road
and Westleigh Street.
Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy will be joined by Councilor Chris Pryor, members of the
Churchill Area Neighbors, school district officials and others to celebrate the completion of the
Bailey Hill Road project. A key goal of the project was to improve safety by redesigning a four-
lane section of roadway to a street that has one through lane in each direction, turn lanes and
medians in the center, and paved bike lanes on each side of the street. Additional safety
features include new crosswalks integrated with median pedestrian refuges and a new type of
pedestrian-activated signal to alert motorists when pedestrians and cyclists are crossing the
street by the Churchill skate park.
Also as part of the project, new paving was constructed the full length of Bailey Hill Road
th
from 18 Avenue to Bertelsen Road and a sidewalk was built along the east side of Bailey Hill
Road from the Churchill Plaza area to Warren Street.
The primary source of funding for the $1.34 million project is $960,000 from the voter-
approved street-repair bond measure, which paid for the paving work. A $360,000 grant from
the Oregon Bicycle and Pedestrian Program will pay for the safety improvements, including the
construction of the medians, crosswalks, and the new signal. Other project funding includes
approximately $20,000 from development fees, and $160 raised by the sister of the young boy
who was killed crossing Bailey Hill Road in August 2007.
More information about the project is available at www.eugene-or/pwprojects.
# # #

Public Works Administration ?
