I. t i ~ _ i
r , _ ~ -
May 23, 200
CONTACT: Gary McNeel, Traffic Operations Supervisor, 682-8451
From Public nf4rmation Section, 682-5523
FOR IMME IATE RELEASE
OLD RO D BETWEEN HIGHWAY 99 AND BARGER CLOSED PERMANENTLY
Empir Park Drive, a short segment of road between Barger Drive and Highway 99, has
been perman ntly closed to through traffic. Eugene Public Works crews this week are removing
the asphalt at he north end of the road, near Highway 99 and Prairie Road, and "dead end" signs
have been ins alled at the south end near Barger. The closure has been planned for several years
and is suppo ed by the Oregon Department of Transportation.
Empir Park Drive is a leftover piece of Old Pacific Highway, which was routed over
Prairie Road. The roadway was relinquished to local government by the state when Highway 99
was located i its current configuration in the 1950s. Over the years, the condition of the

roadway dete ior~ted significantly, and there have been a number of accidents, including at least

one fatality, i volving vehicles using the road as a "cut-off' route.
The se ment of Empire Park Drive south of Barger will remain open.
II'
I
ublic Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or,us
