- i
I ~
PRESS RELEASE
i
I October 28, 2001
Contact for more information:
Brian McCarthy, Cameron McCarthy Gilbert Scheibe Landscape
Architects 485-7385, or
Monica Anderson, Balzhiser & Hubbard Engineers
686-8478
~ For Immediate Release
Smoke Testing of Storm Water Drains at Lane County
Fairgrounds scheduled for Nov. 5-7 or Nov. 12-14
Smoke testing of storm drains at the Lane County Fairgrounds is
planned for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, November 5
through 7 between 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. In case of inclement
weather or if the storm drains are full, the testing will be
conducted the following week, November 12 through 14.
Surveyors from Balzhiser & Hubbard Engineers and SPEC
Industries will be conducting the smoke testing and survey work
to complete a mapping system of storm water and sewer
drainage for the fairgrounds.
According to Brian McCarthy, a consultant overseeing the
project, residents and people in the vicinity of the fairgrounds
should not become alarmed if they see smoke coming from
surface drainage systems at the fairgrounds. Surveyors will use a
nontoxic smoke that is harmless to plants and animals and
leaves no stains or residues. The methods and materials for the
testing are industry standards and are similar to those being used
by the City of Eugene for its own investigations of the sanitary
sewers in nearby neighborhoods, he said.
The fairgrounds management commissioned the testing and
survey work as part of the City of Eugene's requirement for the
fairgrounds Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan. The plan
outlines `best management practices' to prevent contamination
of storm water that could drain into the Amazon Canal, a
waterway protected by the Clean Water Act.
-more-
i
