The
best tim to plant trees is in the winter or early spring, so people are
encour ed to call before March 15 if they re interested in planting street trees
this sea on. Quantities of trees are limited so call soon to get your tree.
Throug the NeighborWoods program, the City of Eugene encourages
residen s or volunteers to plant and take care of trees along rights-of--way within
city limi s. Since the program was started in 1992, more than 6,000 street trees
have b en planted by homeowners, businesses, schools, and civic groups
and oth r local organizations.
Here s ow the program works. The City provides street trees suitable for
specific locations and also takes care of pruning and other major tasks.
Neighb rWoods participants or volunteers plant the trees if they are able, and
they al o water, weed, and keep an eye on young street trees, nuturing the
trees t rough the first critical years. Once trees become well established, they
require less care although watering is required for the first 3 years during dry
period .
For mo a information about the NeighborWoods program, call Troy Kreger,
Neighb rWoods Coordinator, at 682-4831, or on the Internet at
www.ci eugene.or.us/pw/tree/freetree.htm.

i
ubllc Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Peaty Street • Eugene; OR 97401.
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541)682-6828 • www.ci.eugene.or.us .
