~ <br /> June 17. 20 2 <br /> CONTACT: Carla Spangler, Inflow and Infiltration Investigation Project Manager <br /> i <br /> From Public Information Section, 682-5523 <br /> FOR IMME IATE RELEASE <br /> SMOKE-T STING OF WASTEWATER LINES BEGINS IN 3 EUGENE NEIGHBORHOODS <br /> Eug ne's annual program to smoke test portions of the local wastewater collection <br /> system begi s today and will continue through mid-September in three city neighborhoods. <br /> The hree areas scheduled to be tested this year are: <br /> • a po ion of the Jefferson Westside neighborhood bordered by 8th and 12th avenues and <br /> i <br /> Alm den and Van Buren streets; <br /> I <br /> • a po ion of the Amazon/Fairmount neighborhood bordered by 23`d and 25th avenues <br /> from Hilyard Street to Miami Lane, and 20th to 27th avenues from University Street to <br /> Cap al Drive; and <br /> a o ion of the Southeast Universit Nei hborhood Association bordered b 29th Place <br /> • P Y 9 Y <br /> and 3`d Avenue from Amazon Drive to Spring Boulevard. <br /> j Crews f om the Eugene Public Works Maintenance Division use smoke as a tool to identify <br /> defects an improper connections in the wastewater system. The smoke used in this process <br /> ~ is non-toxic and does not harm people, plants, animals or property. Residents are notified <br /> before testi g begins in their neighborhoods. <br /> Each y ar, the City tests portions of its 750-mile local wastewater collection system. The <br /> program is unded with revenue received through monthly wastewater user fees. If smoke <br /> testing ide tifies a stormwater connection prohibited by City code, such as a roof drain <br /> connected o the wastewater system, the property owner is notified and required to correct the <br /> problem. roperty owners also are notified if cracks or other defects are found in wastewater <br /> lines on pri ate property, and repair or replacement of those lines is recommended.
