The FBI tirat<sported the letter to the Oregon Public Health lab for <br /> examination. hat examination shorRred there was ao threat. <br /> The c elope was from an out-of-state hospital, and it contained written material from the <br /> Cet~ter3 For isease Cotrtrol concerning smallpox. Additional material in the envelope <br /> contained ho pital procedures for triage and responding to patients with smallpox symptoms. <br /> There was n threat, only the word "smallpox" on the outside ofthe envelope. On-scene threat <br /> analysis sho ed that the envelope posed no credible threat. The letter was taken to the lab as part <br /> of normal ' stigative procedures. <br /> Altho gh this case did not involve either a real threat or a hoax, it is important for the <br /> public to kno that the FBI has strict guidelines in such cases.
