This "Trees for Concrete" project in honor of Arbor Day is organized
b~ the City of Eugene NeighborWoods program and its community partner, Eugene Tree Foundation, in an
;effort to create a more livable and green downtown by replacing concrete with trees and flowers along
slder+ualks. In addition, Eugene Stream Team is launching its partnership with Eugene Tree Foundation at
this event by providing over 100 native plants and shrubs from its volunteer-run native plant nursery for
ui~derstory. Community volunteers signed up to help with the planting include employees from the Red Lion
F~otel, this tree planting season's newest star volunteers, and a group of 3'~ to 5"' grade students and their
p~rehts from Home Source, ahome-school association from Bethel.
Mayor Piercy will kick-off the celebration by .accepting Eugene's 26`" consecutive Tree City USA
wand. Tree City USA, a program of the National Arbor Day Foundation and sponsored by the Oregon
C~ep2~rtment of Forestry (ODF), recognizes cities that have developed programs that plant and care for
trees. Representatives from the district ODF office will present the award and join in the festivities.
The tree planting at this year's Arbor Day Celebration is one of two "Trees for Concrete" projects in
h~ondr or Arbor Day. The Public Works Maintenance concrete crew will remove portions of sidewalk at both
tl~e grchard location, as well as at Pearl Street and 18`h Avenue. After helping with the tree planting at
Franklin and Orchard, ETF volunteers will assist the NeighborWoods Coordinator in planting five red maples
oNn Pearl Street to cap the tree planting season.
Arbor Day is America's national tree holiday, a day set aside to plant ceremonial trees, educate
children about the importance of trees and honor the important role trees play in the daily lives of people in
communities across the country. This project was selected to commemorate Arbor Day this year because the
purpose of Trees for Concrete so closely matches the mission of Arbor Day. Founded in 1872, Arbor Day is
now celebrated in all 50 states. Oregonians celebrate Arbor Week the first full week in April.
