~ - ~ •3
f Se tember'23, 2005
p
CONTACT, Tony Jobanek, Public Works Maintenance Supervisor, 541-682-4835
From Public Information Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
i
~ Eugene's 2005 Leaf Program Begins October 31
I
Althpugh residents are encouraged to use their leaves as compost or mulch, the City of
Eugene offers a curbside leaf collection service in the fall and winter to keep leaves from
plugging the storm drainage system and degrading water quality in local streams.
~ Herd are some tips if you decide to pile leaves in the street:
~ • Pile', leaves well away from catch basins. If a catch basin does plug, scrape the leaves
away from the grate.
• Remove leaves from sidewalks. Wet, slippery leaves are a hazard to pedestrians.
• Avoid putting leaves in bike lanes. If you must deposit leaves in a bike lane, place them
in rows so irhey do not block the flow of water, and leave at least half the bike lane clear.
• Place your leaves so they do not obstruct the flow of traffic. Piles that even partially
! block a traffic lane can cause motorists to swerve into oncoming traffic.
• Leawe plenty of room between leaf piles and parked cars.
~ • Keep your leaf pile clean. Don't mix leaves with branches, rocks, or lawn clippings
because that make it difficult to reuse the leaves for mulch or compost.
• Please wait to put leaves in the street until the weekend before before the scheduled
~ pickup in ydur area. Leaves placed in the street too early tend to blow around or get washed
j into storm drains.
~ Eugene Public Works Maintenance crews follow a regular collection schedule. Improved
streets with storm drainage systems receive first priority for leaf removal. Bike lanes along
arterials ark picked up weekly.
~ Hem's Eugene's 2005 leaf collection schedule:
Firs$ Round
Oct 31 through Nov. 4 west Eugene
Nov. 7 through Nov. 11 central Eugene
Nov. 14 through Nov. 18 north Eugene
Nov. 21 through Dec. 2 southeast Eugene
DeG. 5 through Dec. 9 southwest Eugene
Second Round
DeG~. 12 through Dec. 16 west Eugene
DeG'. 19 through Dec. 30 central Eugene
Jan; 2 through Jan. 6 north Eugene
Jan; 9 through Jan. 13 southeast Eugene
~ Jan, 16 through Jan. 2 southwest Eugene
For more information, call Eugene's leaf program hotline at 682-5383, or visit the web at
www.eugene-or.gov (click on the leaf link).
To report plugged drains or flooding problems, call Eugene Public Works Maintenance at
682-4800.
To request leaf delivery, fill out a form available on the web at www.eugene-or.gov or by

~,,1 ~ calling 682-4800.
Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541)682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
