I
I
r
June 28, 20 6
CONTACT: Carla Spangler, I/I Investigation Project Manager, 682-4800
John Gibson, Sub-surface Technical Supervisor, 682-4800
From Public Information Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938
FOR IMME IATE RELEASE (2-PAGE FAX)
SMOKE TESTING OF SEWER LINES BEGINS JULY 5
App ximately 40 miles of sanitary sewer lines in Eugene are scheduled to be smoke
tested begi Wing Wednesday, July 5. The testing locates defects and improper connections that
allow storm ater runoff and groundwater to enter the public wastewater collection system. A
secondary oal of this pilot project will be to assess the effectiveness of the methods and
materials of recent collection system improvements. Also, smoke testing results wilt provide
i
some insig s into the conditions of private building service lines, which are the lines that
~ connect ho es and businesses to the public system.
This year's testing includes portions of the wastewater collection system in the Friendly,
Amazon, S utheast, Jefferson Westside, and Fairmount neighborhoods. Testing will begin in
the area of 6`h Avenue and Tyler Street and is expected to take several months to complete.
Duri g the tests, which are endorsed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,
nontoxic, w ite smoke is released into sanitary sewer lines to identify problems. Residents are
notified bef re testing begins in their neighborhood. The smoke will not harm plants or animals
and will qui kly dissipate leaving no residue or stains.
Aft r smoke is blown into a sewer line, crew members watch for tell-tale signs of
deteriorate lines or improper connections. White smoke rising from the ground generally
indicates a rack or other defect in a sewer line. Smoke coming from a roof gutter, downspout or

i
area drain i dicates that a storm drain is improperly connected to the wastewater collection
system.
Publi Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street .Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541)682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
