August 31, 006
CONTACT: Michelle Cahill, Principal Civil Engineer, 682-6855
From Publi Information Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938
FOR IMME IATE RELEASE
Cob rg Road Repairs Planned as Radar Confirms Site of Underground Bridge
Rep firs to Coburg Road just south of Oakway Road are being planned now that the
Eugene Pu lic Works Department has the results of research on a slump area where a 120-year-
old bridge as found.
A br ken storm pipe that allowed material to enter the pipe and be carried away has been
identified a the primary reason for the slumping at this location. Over time, many jurisdictions
have worke in the area so accurate infrastructure records were difficult to obtain. Instead,
ground pen trating radar was used to locate the old bridge and to find underground utilities and
voids Great d by the broken storm pipe.
The bridge remnants were found to be 20 feet long and approximately 34 feet wide and
mostly cont fined within the southbound lanes of Coburg Road. The uppermost remnants are
approximat ly three feet below the asphalt surface of the roadway. It appears that repair work
can be completed leaving the bridge remnants intact.
The slumping area is being monitored for movement and has been moving since the
investigatio began just a few weeks ago. The repair is a high priority and most likely will occur
within then xt six to eight weeks. To minimize disruption it is anticipated the project will be limited
to night wo k and will occur in phases to avoid major road closures. The repair should take less
than a wee to complete.
Eugene Public Works • www.eugene-or.gov/pw
858 Pearl St eet, Eugene, Oregon 97501 • 541-682-5523 • fax 541-682-6826 • e-mail pwadmin@ci.eugene.or.us

I
