November 3, 2015

CONTACT: Damon Joyner, Surface Maintenance Supervisor, 541-682-4835

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

It’s Still Too Early to Put Leaves in the Street
Eugene residents are asked to not pile leaves in the street until collection is scheduled in
their neighborhood.
City Public Works crews are scheduled to begin collections in the central Eugene area on
Nov. 16, and then they will fan out into three zones – west, north and south – starting Nov. 23.
Piling leaves in the street too early can cause localized flooding, pollute waterways if leaf
debris washes down storm drains, and create hazards for people who drive, bike or walk. Property
owners are liable for injuries or damages caused by negligent placement of leaves or other debris in
the street.
The start of leaf collection is determined, in part, by the availability of workers and
equipment. Many of the Public Works crews and equipment assigned to leaf collection are still
working on asphalt and concrete street repair projects. The city and Lane County coordinate their
collections, particularly in River Road-Santa Clara, and both agencies selected Nov. 16 as the best
date to start collections this year.
City crews have begun vacuuming bike lanes, and staff will review reported public safety
hazards caused by accumulations of leaves to determine the appropriate response.
More information, including collection schedules, safety tips, and online forms to order leaf
deliveries, is available at www.eugene-or.gov/leaf or by calling Public Works Maintenance at 541-
682-4800.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
