<br /> <br /> <br />News Release <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />October 10, 2014 <br /> <br />CONTACT: Chuck Mueller, Project Manager, 541-501-0370 <br /> Shane MacRhodes, Safe Routes to School Coordinator, 541-556-3553 <br /> <br />From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938 <br /> <br />FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE <br /> <br /> <br />Projects Improve Safe Routes to School <br />A series of public projects designed to improve safe routes to schools and encourage children <br />to walk and bike to school is scheduled to begin Monday. <br />Six projects in the Bethel and Eugene school districts will be constructed over the next two <br />months: <br /> <br />Sidewalks will be widened and curb ramps will be constructed along 22 Avenue <br /> <br />nd <br />from Chambers to Jefferson streets, in the vicinity of Adams Elementary School and <br />Arts and Technology Academy. <br /> <br />A pedestrian-activated rapid flashing yellow light will be installed on 18 Avenue at <br /> <br />th <br />Friendly Street, in the vicinity of Adams Elementary and O’Hara Elementary schools. <br /> <br />A pedestrian-activated rapid flashing yellow light will be installed on 22nd Avenue at <br /> <br />Jefferson Street. <br /> <br />In the vicinity of Prairie Mountain and Kalapuya High School, speed reader signs will <br /> <br />be installed on Royal Avenue, and legends will be placed on Terry and Legacy streets. <br /> <br />At Irving School, bike racks and bike hoops will be installed. <br /> <br /> <br />At Malabon Elementary School a concrete path will be constructed through an <br /> <br />easement on Ellsworth and bike hoops will be installed at the school. <br />“Building better infrastructure that makes it safer and easier to walk and bike is a key way to <br />get our kids healthy and active in their daily lives,” says Shane MacRhodes, coordinator of Eugene 4j’s <br />Safe Routes to School program. <br />Knife River Corp., working under contract for the Eugene Public Works Department, is the <br />general contractor on the projects.
