CELEBRATING
YOUTH SPORTS PARKS:
A COMMUNICATIONS PLAN
Celebrating completed projects is one of nine strategies designed to accomplish
the goals and objectives of the Parks and Open Space (POS) Communications Plan. .The completion of
the youth sports parks (YSP) is a significant POS milestone.
OBJECTIVES
• Foster awareness of the successful implementation of the Parks and Open Space bond measure.
• Promote the benefits to youth provided by the youth sports parks
• Convey the City's interest in finding cost - effective and innovative solutions to community needs
KEY AUDIENCES
• Eugene City Council
• 4J School Board
• High schools and middle schools (students, parents, teachers, booster clubs at Churchill, Kennedy,
Sheldon and Cal Young)
• Youth and adult athletic organizations
• Neighborhoods
• Eugene voters and taxpayers
KEY MESSAGES
• The youth sports parks are the result of a good working partnership between the City and 4J
• The innovative use of all - weather synthetic turf athletic fields greatly increases the amount of play time
for community and school team sports
• Youth sports parks are more than football and soccer fields. They're neighborhood -based parks for a
wide range of recreation and community activities.
-- Churchill High School -- all - weather field, improved soccer and softball fields, three half -
court basketball courts, skate park, improved tennis courts, children's play area, picnic tables,
walkways, trees, path lighting, restrooms.
-- Sheldon High School -- all - weather field, full -size and two half -court basketball courts, new
soccer field, improved softball fields, children's play area, performance space, walkways, trees,
path lighting, restrooms, tennis courts (existing).
-- Cal Young Middle School -- skate park, children's play area, walkways, path lighting, full -size
basketball court, restrooms, soccer field (existing).
• These parks represent a significant and wise investment in wholesome activity for young people and
the community ($4 million from POS bond funds and $3.5 million from 4J)
STRATEGIES
• Hold unique events at each YSP to emphasize specific features
• Coordinate with school district (including booster clubs)
• Look for opportunities with good visuals (for TV) and other news "hooks"
• Include lots of kids in the celebrations to emphasize benefits to youth
• Include a diversity of activities at each location (emphasize variety of amenities)
• Target publicity (including ads) to event - specific audiences
• Use highly credible spokespeople to do dedications (e.g., skateboard kids, football and basketball stars)
• Find ways to involve key audiences (e.g., neighborhood group picnics)
• Schedule events to minimize conflict with November election campaigns
• Tie into other POS Communications Plan strategies
