October 14, 2013

CONTACT: Reed Dunbar, Associate Transportation Planner, 541-682-5727
Doug Singer, Project Manager, 541-682-8460

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Watch for New Bike Lanes on Willamette Street (18 to 23 Avenues)
thrd

Bicycling from downtown to south Eugene will become easier this week.
The recent Willamette Street paving project, which replaced the deteriorated pavement and
upgraded sidewalk access ramps from 19 to 23 avenues, also includes bike lanes. The bike lane
thrd
will be striped today on Willamette Street from 13 to 23 avenues for southbound travel and from
thrd
24 to 20 avenues for northbound travel. New bicycle lanes also will be striped on 20 Avenue
ththth
from Willamette to Oak streets, and on Oak Street from 20 to 17 avenues.
thth
The addition of bike lanes on southbound Willamette Street will result in several minor lane
changes. There will be two through lanes for southbound motor vehicles on Willamette Street at
18 Avenue, with a dedicated bike lane for southbound bike traffic on the west side of the street.
th
Vehicles in the left southbound lane can turn left on 18 or go south to 19, where they will be
thth
required to turn left through the addition of a curb extension. The right southbound traffic lane
(between the left lane and the bike lane) is the lane designed for southbound through traffic.
These intersection changes allow the intersection to function better for transit operations
and bicycling , take into account the high number of eastbound trips from southbound Willamette ,
and shorten the pedestrian crossing on 19 Avenue at Willamette Street for students walking to
th
South Eugene High School and others accessing Amazon Park. The new design also preserves a
majority of the available automobile parking supply between 19 and 20 avenues.
thth
The pavement project included the installation of parking bays north of 23 Avenue to
rd
accommodate the demand for on-street parking. Several bicycle route signs and shared lane
markings were installed to enhance navigation for people bicycling through the corridor. The
$936,000 project is being funded through a combination of 2008 pavement bond measure and local
gas tax funds and the City’s transportation operations improvement program.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
