<br /> <br /> <br />Date: August 19, 2013 <br /> <br />CONTACT: Lindsay Selser, Transportation Options Coordinator, 541-682-5094 <br /> <br />FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE <br /> <br />Eugene Sunday Streets Rolls into Bethel Neighborhood on September 8 <br /> <br />This summer’s second Sunday Streets event will be held September 8 in the Bethel neighborhood. <br />From 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. people are invited to enjoy a 1.5-mile car-free route for walking, cycling, roller <br />skating, wheel chairing or any other form of human-powered transportation. <br />The Sunday Streets Bethel route on Elmira Road, Archie Street, Wood Avenue, Baxter Street, <br />Hawthorne Avenue, Berntzen Road, Bell Avenue and Louis Street connects activity centers at Petersen Barn <br />Park and Fairfield Elementary School. These activity centers will feature pedal-powered live music, food carts, <br />free soccer clinics, yoga classes, tree walks, hula hooping, and more. The Petersen Barn Activity Center Stage <br />will include musical performances and classes including Neil Bjorklund and His Bodacious Band, the North <br />Eugene Ukulele Orchestra, line dancing, and Steel Wool. Samba Ja, a local Brazilian percussion ensemble, will <br />be performing along the route and Won Tan Nara Drumming and Dance Ensemble and GreyMatter Jugglers <br />will perform at the Fairfield Elementary School activity center. <br />Volunteers are the key to ensuring that Sunday Streets events are fun, safe, and successful. More than <br />150 volunteers are needed for each event. There is still a need for more “Intersection Superheroes,” who help <br />direct traffic flow, answer questions, help local residents access their homes, and set up or take down <br />barricades at their designated intersection. There are two shifts available: 10:45 a.m. to 2 p.m., and 1:45 to <br />4:15 p.m. People interested in volunteering can go to www.eugene-or.gov/essvolunteer to sign up, or call the <br />Eugene Sunday Streets volunteer coordinator at 541-501-0390. <br />To print out a free LTD bus pass for the event, go to eugenesundaystreets.org. The web site also <br />includes the schedule for group bike rides, suggested routes to and from the event, and a route map that <br />shows available event parking at Fairfield, Malabon, and Cascade schools. <br />The City of Eugene holds Sunday Streets events to promote healthy, active lifestyles. With no <br />designated start or finish, the two-way car-free Sunday Streets route can be enjoyed at everyone’s own pace <br />by many different from of healthy, active transportation.
